Dear Covekeepers, Mike & Mark
hippie-retreat alert! If that ain't your thang, don't bother. Go to any other place in or around Long Beach and leave Shakti Cove to me and my pagan sisters. When I arrived, the proprietress, Celia, was standing outside talking to some guests. I got out of the car, and she said, ''you're not Amani, are you?' She remembered me from a phone call two days prior. She hugged me and said my cabin was ready, that I'd rest easy in the arms of goddesses tonight. Let me say that I was having a nervous breakdown and was really in need of some nurturing. Celia provided it in that moment, and left me alone to take care of myself. Ideal. She gave me the key to my darling little place and pointed me toward the beach, a 10 minute walk through the woods and the tall grass. I spent an hour reading the three old guest books on the night stand, dating back to 1998, all the stories of love and healing that happened in that cabin. I enjoyed nice deep sleep in total darkness and silence. The only light was from a central light pole in the middle of the 'village' that is Shakti Cove, and the only ambient noise was my refrigerator. The sound of the ocean was super soothing, as the sound of the ocean is. I ate a great brunch the next morning (open on Easter- gotta love it) at the Full Circle Café, down the road a ways, on the beach. Awesome. I could keep rambling about my love for Shakti Cove and the peninsula in general, but I'm afraid too many people will discover it. Amani E., Oakland, CA
Thank you, Celia and Harriet, for the great stay! From the genuine, warm greeting (both human and feline) to the comfortable accommodations to the idyllic setting, you exceeded all our expectations. Cottage #7 was a great introduction to the Cove, and we are both "sold" on the great value you offer. We will return!
Dear Covekeepers, Casey & Dakota
Farther up the coast in Ocean Park, Wash., is a relaxing cabin retreat called Shakti Cove, owned by Harriet Cavalli. The PFLAG- and lesbian-owned, gay-operated resort offers modest cabins on three acres of green space. Close to the beach and 30 minutes away from Astoria, this dog-friendly resort provides an affordable weekend getaway. Covekeepers Mark Byrd and Rich Weaver offer hospitality that has long been forgotten by many hotels. Steeped in rustic chic, the accommodations of Shakti Cove offer the quintessential Northwest coastal experience. The cabins are an excellent home base for the queer traveler.
Though the Shakti Cove Cottages are just off Highway 103, you'll feel miles from the outside world. Ten small cedar-shingled cabins stand in a semicircle around a gentle green, each funky-cozy, with its own carport, bath and kitchen facilities. Amble a quarter mile down a private gravel road to the beach, likely passing black-tailed deer grabbing a meal from the Shakti's wild-flower garden along the way. Shakti Cove is popular with gays and lesbians, as well as travelers with dogs (even large ones), but the "covekeepers" Cavalli make visitors of every kind feel at home. As one former guest wrote in the in-cabin journal: "It's so nice to feel welcomed instead of just tolerated."
